Richard D. Steinke, a strong negotiator
with
extensive experience in industrial real estate management, is Executive Director of the
Port of Long Beach. He was appointed to
his current position in December 1997.
As Executive Director, Steinke's duties include:
Overseeing the operations of the busiest container port
in America with nearly 6 million containers handled in 2004.
Overseeing the various projects and programs will insure
the growth of the Port for its customers.
Steinke had been Deputy Executive Director since 1995. In
that capacity, he oversaw the Port's transportation, environmental
and long-range planning; construction, design and traffic
engineering; marketing and customer development; real estate
management; and community, media and public relations.
Prior to that, Steinke served as the Port's Properties Director
for five years. In that capacity, he negotiated leases and
other real estate agreements with Port customers and directed
the wharfinger office, which is responsible for the day-to-day
operations and enforcement of port traffic.
During his tenure as Properties Director, Steinke was instrumental
in negotiating the successful 1994 purchase of 725 acres of
north harbor land and water area from Union Pacific Resources
Company (UPRC). In September 1997, Hanjin Shipping Co. of
South Korea opened a $277 million, 170-acre terminal on part
of the property.
Steinke also helped iron out the sale of 13.8 acres of land
to Ultramar, Inc., an oil refining company. The sale included
provisions for the Port's receipt of valuable easements for
rail traffic through the property.
Steinke came to the Port in 1990 after serving five years
as airport property officer at Stapelton International Airport
in his native Denver.
Steinke is on the Board of Directors of the Harbor Association
of Industry and Commerce, the Board of Trustees for St. Mary
Medical Center in Long Beach and Advisory Board of the Long
Beach Education Foundation.
A graduate of Chadron State College in Nebraska, he has pursued
a Master's degree from the University of Colorado.
Steinke resides in Long Beach with his wife, Tamy, and three
daughters, Sarah, Kyle Marie, and Lauren.
