Janice Hahn was elected as Councilwoman of the 15th District
of the City of Los Angeles in June of 2001. The 15th District
encompasses the communities of Harbor City, Harbor Gateway,
San Pedro, Watts and Wilmington.
Councilwoman Hahn previously served the 15th District as
its elected representative on the Charter Commission, which
worked for two years to re-write the City’s 75-year
old Charter. The new City Charter, adopted by the people of
the City of Los Angeles in 1999, reshaped the workings of
City government. Included in the new Charter are many elements
championed by Councilwoman Hahn, including Neighborhood Councils,
Area Planning Commissions, regular mandatory financial audits
of all City departments and permanent local representation
on the Harbor and Airport Commissions.
Councilwoman Hahn has a long history of civic activism in
every community in the 15th district. She served as President
of the Gang Alternatives Program – Harbor Area (GAP),
helping our children stay in school and avoid the pressures
to join gangs. She also chairs the School-to-Career Alliance,
bringing businesses and schools together to train workers
for productive careers in our communities. An active member
of the Rotary Club, she has coordinated donations of free
trigger locks to reduce kids’ access to their parents’
guns. She serves on the Board of Habitat for Humanity, Rainbow
Women’s Shelter, Watts/Willowbrook Boys and Girls Club,
South Bay Workforce Investment Board, and Martin Luther King,
Jr. Hospital Community Advisory Board. She is the immediate
past President of the Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce and a
founding Board member of the South Bay Latino Chamber of Commerce.
Councilwoman Hahn also possesses a diverse background in
the private sector. She served as Director of Marketing for
the Alexander Hagen Company, supervising the marketing and
promotions for numerous shopping centers in the Los Angeles
area. During her tenure as Director of Community Outreach
for Western Waste Industries she coordinated recycling programs
throughout the South Bay, providing opportunities for school
children to learn the importance of protecting and preserving
the environment. She also served as Vice President for Prudential
Securities, handling municipal bond and government finance
transactions, and has earned competitive Series 7 and Series
63 licenses. Most recently, Ms. Hahn served as Public Affairs
Region Manager for Southern California Edison, monitoring
legislation and providing service to communities throughout
the South Bay.
Councilwoman Janice Hahn is the daughter
of the late Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn and
the sister of former Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn. She is
a lifelong resident of Los Angeles and lives in San Pedro with
her two sons Danny and Mark. Her eldest daughter, Katy, was recently
married to John Yates.
